The latest edition of the RedPod has just been published and my guest was Matt Hanson, the creative mind behind A Swarm of Angels. This is an innovative community film project in which a movie will be made in a very 'open source' way with the whole community collaborating and making decisions - and then the film will be given away for free.
For free? That's crazy - how will the people running the project live? Well, the model has been turned on its head, and the people participating in the community pay to be part of it, giving them access to something they could never normally be part of.
It also then means the finished film will get out to a much wider audience - where it might otherwise struggle against the line up of Hollywood blockbusters.
This is the power of Free.
In the programme Matt mentioned an article by Chris Anderson of Wired magazine (and author of The Long Tail), called Free! Why $0.00 Is the Future of Business, which is well worth a read.
The web does seem to mean that people expect things to be free, so how entrepreneurs and businesses face up that will be very interesting, and we could see some fascinating ideas emerge - but also its likely some established businesses will hit the wall.
