Last night I recorded a special edition of the Redpod podcast, remembering the life and work of Sir John Harvey-Jones, who died recently. Click here to find out more about the programme, and to listen.

He earned his spurs with a dramatic restructuring programme it ICI, but became a household name when he starred in a BBC TV series called 'The Troubleshooter' in 1990.

The programme featured him going behind the scenes in a company, finding out about their problems - and then suggesting the solutions, which sometimes didn't go down too well.

One of my guests on the programme was the MD of a company that featured in the programme, and he had very fond memories of Sir John.

I also got to meet him a few times, interviewing him for a programme published by my company Red Audio - Sir John Harvey-Jones in his own words. We met in a local pub - although I describe it as a cafe on the CD, because he had recently had a stroke, and I didn't want people getting the wrong idea about his slurred speech! He was very friendly, and also interested to hear about my own business, asking lots of questions. Then I met him again two years later and he remembered all about me and was asking for updates on the things we had spoken about!

I used to really enjoy the Troubleshooter programme. It was so much better than the current crop of 'reality TV' programmes that are supposedly about business and entrepreneurship. Fingers crossed the BBC will repeat it in his memory soon.

One thing you can be sure of: If there is a god then heaven is about to become much more efficiently managed.
